Towering high over the city since 1626, Elizabeth Fort has an immense link to the harbour and the maritime history of Cork. It was built to protect the city from forces arriving by water, which indeed happened in 1690. Later, it was used as a convict depot, holding prisoners prior to transportation to Australia. Why not take a guided tour of Elizabeth Fort during Cork Harbour Festival. Enjoy the spectacular view from the fort and be fascinated by Ireland’s best-preserved urban artillery fortification.
