SURFACE TENSION,

An exhibition of new works by Petrina Shortt, curated by Aoife Nolan.

As artists, Petrina Shortt and Aoife Nolan work in different mediums, disciplines, environments and to different aesthetics. Despite this, over 18 months of conversation, they have found intersections at points of reference within our individual practices. SURFACE TENSION is the work of Shortt, curated by Nolan, with the intent of investigating these specific conceptual and emotional meeting points.

An Artist in Conversation between Shortt and Nolan will happen on Wed 7th June – 1.00 – 2.00 pm, in the gallery. Here the artist and curator will discuss how they both came to the decision to work together in this way.

Petrina Shortt – Artist Statement:

“My practice takes the form of drawing, print, painting and sculpture. It is concerned with looking at ways in which we can uncover and know a specific place, while at the same time asking broader questions about belonging and ecological guardianship. The work explores visible and eroded histories that exist deep within the landscape, using environmental geography and the interplay of elements as a guide. It is a layering of temporal experiences; tidal, seasonal, geological and human. Gathering moments of time in one place. It consisted of paintings, drawings and sculptures responding to the marine and geological environments around a small area of Dunmanus Bay, West Cork. I am particularly interested in geological deep time and how knowledge of this can influence how we make long time decisions concerning global ecology.”
